What is live rosin?
Live rosin is a solventless concentrate made from fresh-frozen cannabis using only ice water, heat and pressure. "Live" means the plant was frozen right at harvest instead of being dried and cured, which keeps more of its natural terpenes, the compounds behind each strain's aroma and flavor.
It's usually made in three steps (Hydrobuilder):
- Wash. The frozen cannabis is stirred in ice water. The cold makes the trichomes, the resin glands on the flower, snap off and sink through a series of mesh bags. What's collected is ice water hash, also called bubble hash.
- Dry. The hash is freeze-dried, which removes water without heat.
- Press. The dried hash is pressed between heated plates, typically around 160 to 200°F, and the oil that flows out is rosin.
You'll often see "live hash rosin" on labels. It's the same idea: rosin pressed from hash made from fresh-frozen plants.
Because it takes only ice water, heat and pressure, live rosin appeals to shoppers who want a concentrate made without solvents. It's also more hands-on to make, which is why it's usually the premium-priced option (PAX).
What is live resin?
Live resin is a concentrate extracted from fresh-frozen cannabis with a hydrocarbon solvent, usually butane or propane. The solvent pulls the cannabinoids and terpenes out of the frozen plant, and is then purged out of the extract with gentle heat and vacuum (ExtraktLAB).
Like live rosin, it starts from plants frozen at harvest, so it keeps the bright, strain-specific flavor that drying and curing can fade. Live resin has long been known for holding on to terpenes (PAX).
You'll find it in vape cartridges and in dabbable concentrates. Look for "live resin" on the label.
What is distillate?
Distillate is cannabis oil refined until it is almost pure cannabinoid. It starts as an extract, usually from dried and cured cannabis. That extract is then heated under vacuum so each compound separates out at its own boiling point, leaving a clear, concentrated oil (High Times).
Distillate commonly tests at around 90% cannabinoids or higher (Vessel). The refining also removes the plant's own terpenes, so flavor is added back afterward. Because the flavor is added in a controlled way, distillate products can deliver a clean, consistent taste.
If you want strong, straightforward potency and a dependable flavor, distillate is a great place to start.
BHO vs CO2 vs ethanol: how do the extraction methods differ?
Live resin and distillate both start with a solvent pulling cannabinoids and terpenes out of the plant. The three main methods are hydrocarbon (BHO), CO2 and ethanol (MJBizDaily). Each one is purged or separated out before the extract moves on.
- BHO (butane hash oil): BHO is hydrocarbon extraction made with butane. Butane, or sometimes propane, flows through the cannabis, collects the cannabinoids and terpenes, then is evaporated off. Extracts made with propane are sometimes called PHO. Live resin is a hydrocarbon extract made from fresh-frozen plants.
- CO2: Carbon dioxide is pressurized until it becomes a supercritical fluid, a state between gas and liquid, above about 1,060 psi and 92°F (Cannabis Business Times). By adjusting pressure and temperature, extractors can target specific compounds. When the pressure drops, the CO2 turns back into gas and leaves the extract behind.
- Ethanol: Cannabis is soaked in food-grade alcohol, the plant material is removed, and the liquid is filtered. The alcohol is then purged from the extract (MJBizDaily). Ethanol is one of the solvents used to make the starting oil for distillate (Vessel).
| BHO (hydrocarbon) | CO2 | Ethanol | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solvent | Butane or propane | Pressurized carbon dioxide | Food-grade alcohol |
| How it's removed | Evaporated and purged | Returns to a gas when pressure drops | Evaporated and purged |
| Known for | Flavorful live resin, badder and other dabbable textures | Selective, adjustable extraction | Making oil that's refined into distillate |
Live rosin is the one concentrate in this guide that uses no solvent at all.

If a vape's label doesn't say live rosin, hash rosin or live resin, ask a budtender what kind of oil is inside.
How do you choose between live rosin, live resin and distillate?
All three can deliver a great experience. The right one depends on what matters most to you.
- Want a concentrate made without solvents? Choose live rosin or live hash rosin.
- Want big, true-to-the-strain flavor? Live rosin and live resin both start from fresh-frozen plants, so either is a great fit.
- Want strong potency with a clean, consistent flavor? Distillate is a dependable everyday pick.
- New to concentrates? Start with a vape cartridge before trying dabbable concentrates, and take one small puff at a time.
Our budtenders are happy to walk you through the labels and help you compare.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between live rosin and live resin?
Both are made from fresh-frozen cannabis. Live rosin is made with only ice water, heat and pressure, with no solvents. Live resin is extracted with a hydrocarbon solvent, such as butane or propane, which is then purged out.
Is live rosin solventless?
Yes. Live rosin is made by washing fresh-frozen cannabis in ice water to collect hash, then pressing that hash with heat and pressure. No chemical solvents are used.
What is distillate?
Distillate is cannabis oil refined under heat and vacuum until it is almost pure cannabinoid, often around 90% or higher. Flavor is added back after refining.
What does "live" mean on a cannabis concentrate?
"Live" means the cannabis was frozen right after harvest instead of being dried and cured. Freezing helps preserve the plant's natural terpenes and flavor.
What is hash rosin?
Hash rosin is rosin pressed from ice water hash, also called bubble hash. Live hash rosin is made from hash washed from fresh-frozen plants.
Why does live rosin cost more?
Live rosin is a small-batch, hands-on product, so it is usually priced as a premium concentrate.
What is BHO?
BHO stands for butane hash oil, a concentrate made by extracting cannabis with butane, a hydrocarbon solvent, which is then purged out. Live resin is often made this way. CO2 and ethanol are two other common extraction solvents.
